SCBA / Breathing Apparatus

Breathing Apparatus Training Course (8 hours) - Course Outline

The breathing apparatus training course will enable the learner to use a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) safely and effectively during normal occupational assignments and emergency operations. Training in the correct use of breathing apparatus will give the learner fundamental knowledge and skills to ensure that respiratory protection is not intentionally compromised, and that they retire from hazardous areas before their air is depleted.
This breathing apparatus training course incorporates the specific outcomes and assessment criteria of the SAQA registered Unit Standard.

Pre-requisites:
•  Communications. NQF level 3.
•  Mathematical Literacy. NQF level 3. It is recommended that learners should be in a fit medical and physical condition as per industry standards and norms.

The breathing apparatus training course includes formal instruction on relevant topics associated with the use of breathing apparatuses such as understanding of respiration, different hazardous atmospheres as well as practical exercises in donning, operating and maintaining this protective gear correctly. It will enable the learner to use a self-contained breathing apparatus safely and effectively during normal occupational assignments and emergency operations. This training course covers the following: the physiology of respiration; the nature and characteristics of common hazardous atmospheres; limitations of a self-contained breathing apparatus; the components of a self-contained breathing apparatus and their functions; inspecting and maintaining a self-contained breathing apparatus in a state of readiness; donning and doffing a self-contained breathing apparatus safely and efficiently; working in an area of obscured visibility while wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus.
