Fire 2 (16 hours) - Course Outline

This extended basic fire fighting course will be enable employees to fight insipient-stage fires in the workplace using basic fire fighting equipment. This fire fighting course incorporates the specific outcomes and assessment criteria of the SAQA registered Unit Standard 12484.

Pre-requisites:
•  Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.
•  Mathematical Literacy at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.
Important! It is recommended that learners should be in a fit medical and physical condition as per industry standards and norms. Leaners must be reasonably fit with no underlying injuries e.g. back, hip & joints.

This extended basic fire fighting training will be enable employees to identify different classes of fires, and to contain, prevent and extinguish different types of fires by operating basic fire fighting equipment. This extended basic fire fighting course is a hands-on, practical course but includes formal instruction on the various aspects of fire safety and prevention, fire behaviour and basic fire fighting equipment, techniques and procedures.
This extended basic fire fighting course includes topics such as identifying the type of fire, evaluating its context and selecting the appropriate fire fighting procedure; identifying, selecting and checking appropriate fire fighting and safety equipment; fighting containable/extinguishable fires; retreating from fire site and handing over to appropriate personnel; reporting/recording the status of fire and equipment; basic life support and care for burns.
Extended fire fighting course contents

•  Fire policy and procedures in the workplace including prevention strategies and safety procedures (fire defence policy; fire prevention; Industry safe practices; evacuation).
•  Identifying types of fires, fire contexts and selecting the appropriate fire fighting procedure (theory of fire and fire spread; causes of fires; classes of fires: fire behaviour: phases of a fire; extinguishing methods; factors that change the nature of a fire).
•  Firm understanding of how the equipment is to be used to its full potential - identifying, selecting and checking appropriate fire fighting equipment (fire hoses, portable fire extinguishers, buckets and fixed extinguisher systems) and safety equipment (breathing apparatus awareness, fire blankets, protective clothing for fire fighting).
•  Fighting containable/extinguishable fires including fire monitoring changes in the fire.
•  Retreating from fire site and handing over to appropriate personnel.
•  Reporting/recording the status of a fire and equipment (check & service recording of equipment).
•  Practical training and participation in dry powder fire extinguishers, hose and hydrant drills.
•  Basic life support and care for burns.
Assessment

Learning material will be handed out 7 days prior to the course, to allow learners to complete the pre-course assignment. The advance preparation is imperative for the learners to prepare them for the course. N.B. All learners attending the two day course must bring the learning material with them together with the completed pre-course assignment without which they will not be accepted onto the course and full fees will be charged.
