First Aid Level 3 (40 Hours) - Course Outline

The level 3 first aid course will enable the first responder in the workplace
to prevent and respond to health emergencies at an advanced level
particularly those emergencies arising from a specific occupational risk in
that workplace. The level 3/advanced first aid training course also covers
topics essential for persons working or living in areas where medical
emergency response is slow and/or medical care is not readily accessible.
This Level 3/advanced first aid course meets the requirements of the
Department of Labour in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
in respect of workplaces where hazardous conditions are present and
incorporates the specific outcomes and assessment criteria of the SAQA
registered Unit Standard:

•  Communication at NQF Level 2 .
•  Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
   In order for the learner to achieve this unit standard the learner must
   already be competent in:
•  Level 2 First aid course: 'Provide risk based primary emergency care/
   first aid in the workplace'. (US ID120496)
•  AIDS course 'Provide information about HIV and AIDS and treatment
   options in community care and support situations' (US ID 260597).

The level 3 first aid course is a comprehensive first aid course that
includes the following: principles of advanced primary emergency care in
health emergencies for people in the workplace; sustaining an advanced
level of preparedness to deal with emergencies in the workplace;
assessing and managing a multiple injured emergency scene/disaster in
the workplace; demonstrating knowledge and understanding of anatomy
and physiology of the human body and the specific disorders and
diseases relating to each system as prescribed for this course;
demonstrating primary emergency life support (adults, children and
infants); managing shock; conducting a secondary assessment of the
victim/s of a medical or trauma emergency and maintaining appropriate
primary emergency care.By using a systematic approach to first aid, our
first aid courses are designed to help learners to work logically, efficiently
and effectively when assessing and managing an emergency.


First Aid Level 3 Course Contents

•  Principles of first aid and safety.
•  Universal precautions.
•  Ethics related to emergency care.
•  The first responder and the law.
•  Preparedness to deal with sudden illness or emergency at an advanced

•  Artificial respiration.
•  Managing a choking victim.
•  One- and two-rescuer CPR (adults, children and infants).
•  Recovery positions with and without a spinal board and spider harness.
•  Transporting the patient according to the injury, disorder or condition of
   the patient/s and available means of transport; rescue carries.

•  Pulse sites and pulse monitoring .
•  Emergency treatment of shock (hypovolemic, cardiogenic and

•  Common infectious diseases, severe headaches, excessive diarrhoea,
   vomiting, any type of haemorrhage.
