Introduction to Hazardous Materials Awareness & Initiating Actions at a Hazmat Incident

Course Outline
The purpose of this course is to give Awareness-level First Responders a basic understanding of the nature and classification of Hazardous Chemical Agents and Dangerous Goods and the importance of safety controls and procedures when dealing with them. Learners will gain an understanding of their role in the event of an emergency involving these materials.
When it comes to hazardous materials, it is important, and required by law, that employees are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained, with regards to the potential risks to health caused by exposure. The course covers the dangers presented by hazardous materials, training in correct procedures for handling, storing and transporting these materials and initial actions required in the event of an incident.
Course Content:
•  Terminology
•  The nature of Hazardous Chemical Agents & Dangerous Goods.
•  How hazardous materials can harm you (health, physical and environmental hazard classes).
•  The importance of risk assessment in the workplace & implementing control mechanisms to mitigate harm.
•  The UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification & Labelling of Chemicals.
•  The UN ’Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods’ model regulations.
•  Regulations governing hazardous materials labelling, packaging, Safety Data Sheets, pictograms, placarding, prescribed transport documentation (OHS Act; SANS; NRT Act).
•  Regulations for handling & storage of Hazardous Chemical Agents and Dangerous Goods in the workplace and in transit, including the compatibility of substances.
•  Regulations governing the responsibilities of persons in a workplace where hazardous substances are handled, stored or transported.
•  Recognising an emergency involving hazardous materials.
•  Initiating emergency actions at a hazardous materials incident according to company protocols and procedures, including identifying hazardous substance/s involved.
•  Safety and scene controls and procedures.
•  The Emergency Response Guidebook overview.
•  Recognising physical signs and symptoms of Hazmat contamination.
•  Personal Protective Equipment and Decontamination strategies overview.
