The Functions of the Workplace Health and Safety Representative (8 hours) - Course outline

This course covers the required health and safety representatives’ activities in the workplace. It incorporates the specific outcomes and assessment criteria of the SAQA registered Unit 259622.
This course will enable health and safety representatives to understand the objectives and legal requirements regarding health and safety in the workplace. The learners will be able to explain the rights, powers, functions and duties of the workplace health and safety representative and how any problems concerning health, safety and environment may be handled. Learners will also be able to participate in the safety, health and environmental structures and measure these activities according to health, safety and environmental requirements.

Pre-requisites:
•  Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
•  Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

This course includes topics such as workplace health and safety legislation relating to health and safety representatives, employees and employers; requirements to conduct SHE representation activities at a workplace; addressing SHE related issues within the scope of authority of health and safety representatives and complying with activities within SHE structures.

•  Responsibilities and designation of the health and safety representative.

•  Conducting safety, health and environmental representation activities in the workplace.
•  Specific duties of the health and safety representative.
•  Preventing accidents
•  Addressing safety, health and environment related issues within the scope of authority.
•  Procedures for dealing with health and safety issues.
•  Identifying hazards systematic approach.
•  Monthly inspections; gathering info checklists.
•  Health and safety committee meetings.
